2017 Taiwan Lantern Festival Background
In Taiwan, the Lantern featival occurs at Lunar New Year the 15th. Every year Taiwanese local government will take turns to hold the national lantern festival, displaying many lanterns and activities.
This year’s 2017 Taiwan lantern festival was in YunLin (雲林), a central-Taiwan county and a major Taiwan agricultural production area, famous for its rice, soy sauce, watermelon and more.
We went there in the afternoon to avoid the traffic, and stayed until it got dark. Thus we enjoyed how the festival changes from daytime to nighttime.
Aboriginal Area -Food Area
This time the lantern festival has many areas focusing on Taiwan’s old and new cultures. We started by the aboriginal area.
SaiSiyat group lantern representation. Unfortunately the authority seemed to alter the direction their traditional Swastika-like “thunder lady (雷女)” symbol to avoid criticism. What a lame way of culture communication!
Authentic SaiSiyat symbol that I shot from Miaoli’s aboriginal village.
Of course, a lantern festival without a street food area is inappropriate. There was a huge area dedicated for street vendors all over Taiwan.
“Self-explosion does not count”.
Grilled whole pigs.
Winter Gate of the food area.
Immigration Culture/Region Area
Also new was an area dedicated to new Taiwanese immigrants from South East Asia.
Philippine festival themed lanterns.
As Taiwan is a very diverse religion country, the religion area has many of the festival’s biggest, well made lanterns.
I heard this was a very important role for the MaZu belief.
Main Lantern Area Gate
Here we entered the main lantern area.
This year’s main chicken festival lantern.
Another main statue depicting YunLin’s major agricultural products: rice, watermelon, peanuts, etc.
Individual/Local Government/Company sponsored Area
Here the local towns and companies had also their own lanterns.
Taiwan Beer sponsored lantern.
TaTung Electronics (大同電器), famous for its ultra long life rice cooker.
Each local township in YunLin has a lantern:
Black Fish Egg (烏魚子) themed lantern.
Also performance cart.
Also an area for local specialty.
A Glove Puppet themed lantern.
The puppet lantern was operated by an excavator.
Taiwan Postal Service lantern.
YunLin Farm Themed Artistic Area
To me the most interesting area in this year’s festival was ab area dedicated to collaboration of artists and local communities. Instead of focusing on building the most glamorous lanterns, here the creators tried to interpret local cultures in new ways.
The flying bamboo sprouts.
V for Vendetta, Taiwanese version.
Twilight & Dark
As the sun went down, the lanterns finally lit up.
