Operating System (OS)

Definition:

The core software that enables you to use the computer resources, like run other software, do computation, access Internet, read and store files.

 

Every computer (PC, laptop, tablet, mobile phone, game consoles, machine controls) must have an OS for users to start and use.

 

Analogy:

  • Pilots to airplanes. Captains to ships.

Common Examples:

  • Windows. Most used OS for PC.
  • Linux. Most used OS for web servers.
  • Mac OS: OS for Apple Mac computers/laptops.
  • Android: OS developed by Google for smart phones.
  • iOS: OS developed by Apple for iPad/iPhone.
