Why Ride TaiChung Great Snow Mountain?

Taiwan is very hot during Summer. To have a nice cool ride, one option is to head to the mountains of at least 1000 m high. You kill two birds with one stone by enjoying the cool weather and training your climbing skill.

Yet during Summer time Taiwan also have typhoons and big rains, which causes some rock-slides at many mountain areas. If you live in TaiChung area, two mountain places I found are more stable and safe:

  1. TaiChung Great Snow Mountain 大雪山.
  2. Nantou XiTou + Sun Link Sea 溪頭/杉林溪.

As recently the Great Snow Mountain reduced its entrance price to half, I decided to do this route and brought my drone for some mountain birds eye shots. In previous ride I could only go to the 32km point. Now I could advance to 42 km (still 8km was closed due to maintenance).

Start to 1000 m Elevation

The route to TaiChung Great Snow Mountain was all on one road. We started at the bottom’s 7-11 for supply.

After passing the police station, this part of TaiChung Great Snow Mountain was all forest and no residential buildings. This was one thing I preferred Great Snow Mountain over XiTou/Sun Link Sea, which was overdeveloped.

One drawback of TaiChung Great Snow Mountain was its narrow roads. Not a problem for bicycles but can be tricky sometimes when two cars met.

There was a single-lane tunnel on TaiChung Great Snow Mountain’s road. Not a problem for cyclists, as there was traffic control.
